Monday Night Open Division: Goals, Nerves, and a Whole Lot of New Faces
If Week 1 told us anything, it’s this: the Monday Night Open Division is not going to be short on goals.
Across four games, 37 balls hit the back of the net. Five teams were making their debut this session. One team had a front-row seat with a bye. And nearly every match had its own subplot worth following.
Let’s rewind the tape.
East York United 10 – Shurjo United FC 4
East York United didn’t tiptoe into their first game as a new team — they played with freedom and confidence from the opening whistle.
Ten goals is eye-catching on paper, but what stood out most was how many different players were involved. M. Bradley Ali scored twice, M. Charles added three, and contributions came from P. Petri, W. Tanner, D. McLean, Y. Ghaly and G. Papaefthimiou. The attack wasn’t predictable. It came in waves and from multiple angles.
For Shurjo United FC, there are positives to hold onto. R. Karim’s hat trick was sharp and clinical, and S. Khan added another. Scoring four goals in any game gives you something real to build on. If they can tighten up defensively and cut down a few transition moments, this group has enough firepower to push opponents all season.
East York leaves Week 1 atop the table on goal differential. But the early takeaway isn’t just the scoreline — it’s the depth of options they’ve already shown.
Southwest Sixers 7 – Brill FC 3
The Southwest Sixers went about their business in a steady, organized way. Seven different names appeared on the scoresheet — L. Savva, T. Zografos, D. Stamtopulos, S. Frank, C. Kesek, B. Martinez and I. Durrani — and that kind of balance can be difficult to defend over 60 minutes.
They didn’t rely on one hot foot. They moved the ball, created space, and took their chances.
Brill FC, though, had their own highlight: A. Laeye’s hat trick. Three goals in the season opener is something to feel good about. The challenge for Brill won’t be creating chances — they’ve already shown they can — but managing stretches of pressure and limiting extended runs from opponents.
Week 1 losses can sting, but they also offer clarity. Brill knows exactly where to focus before next Monday.
NTSC 5 – Seawaves 4
This was the game of the night.
Two new teams — NTSC and Seawaves — both making their first appearance of the session, and neither looked nervous. Instead, it turned into a back-and-forth exchange that could have gone either way.
K. Klas led NTSC with three goals, while Christian and R. Liapi added important finishes in key moments. They were efficient in front of goal, capitalizing when openings appeared.
Seawaves, also new to the division, matched them stride for stride. V. Mamugan scored twice, and K. Selvanathan and C. Sharvananthan added one each. At 5–4, the margin was as thin as it gets. A single defensive stop or one more clean look at goal could have flipped the result.
For two debuting teams, this felt like a midseason contest. High tempo. Little hesitation. Plenty of belief on both benches.
NTSC leaves with three points. Seawaves leave with proof that they belong.
FC Kudas 5 – Markham Blizard 4
Another one-goal game. Another pair of new teams learning about each other in real time.
FC Kudas, new this session, found their edge through T. Mohammed’s hat trick, with A. Endre and N. Maharaj rounding out the scoring. They showed composure late, protecting a narrow lead under pressure.
Markham Blizard — also debuting this session — nearly stole it. I. Javed delivered one of the most impressive individual performances of the night, scoring four times and keeping his side within touching distance throughout. Four goals in your first outing speaks volumes about the attacking potential in this lineup.
This one likely left both sides thinking about small moments — a missed clearance, a deflection, a final pass. But if this is what these teams look like in Week 1, there’s plenty more to come.
Goofingtons FC: Watching and Waiting
While the rest of the division traded goals, Goofingtons FC had a bye this week.
That means fresh legs heading into Week 2 — and a full slate of film to review. They’ve now seen how the new teams play, how open games can become, and where defensive discipline will matter most.
Sometimes the best Week 1 result is rest and preparation.
Early Table Notes
After one week, East York United, Southwest Sixers, NTSC and FC Kudas all sit on three points. East York leads on goal differential after their ten-goal outing.
Below them, Seawaves, Markham Blizard, Brill FC and Shurjo United FC are still searching for their first points — but none of those teams looked overmatched. In fact, two of the losses were by a single goal, and several clubs showed clear attacking identity.
One more reminder: five teams are new this session — NTSC, East York United, FC Kudas, Markham Blizard and Seawaves. Three picked up wins immediately. Two lost by a single goal. That’s not a group easing into the league; it’s a group already comfortable competing in it.
What Week 1 Really Showed
Goals will not be in short supply.
Several teams can score from multiple sources.
Narrow margins suggest this table can shift quickly.
Newcomers are already woven into the competitive picture.
It’s only one week, but there’s a clear theme: no one is going to coast through Monday nights.
If the opener is any indication, this season will reward depth, defensive focus, and late-game composure. And for teams that came up just short? The gap is small. Very small.
Week 2 can’t come soon enough.
